Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered numerous other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state initial examinations suggest the substance was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; investigators are not yet aware of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the residents for details.
An important representative commented the incident left him speechless and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of migrant background in 2020.
