Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
