Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying such drugs must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
