European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
